THE LEGEND OF THE GOLD TRAIN (2023)
In the endgame of WWII a few hundred bank employees and their family members rescued Hungary's entire gold reserves on a train from the invading Soviet army and were hiding it in a small Austrian village until the end of the war. During these months they had to protect the gold not just from the rapidly approaching Russians, but also from the retreating Germans and even from their own government as well - without a single gunshot. Re-enacted scenes, archive materials and interviews with the last surviving passengers of the Gold Train give us a glimpse of what it was like being on the train as a child, how the bank management risked their lives to notify the American Counterintelligence about the gold, and what awaited them back in their homeland in return for their extremely courageous act. This is the story of one of the greatest painters of the 20th century, Sava Šumanović (1896-1942), a painter of light who celebrated life and suffered a cruel death at the hands of the fascists in 1942.
