Balkanika foundation

Balkanika foundation was set up by highly respected publishing companies
from seven Balkan countries: Toena (Albania), Biblioteka 48 (“Library-48, Bulgaria),
Kedros Publishers (Greece), Stubive Kulture (“Pillars of Culture”, Serbia), Polirom
(Romania), Can Publishing (Turkey) with the goal of establishing a literary
award of the Balkan peoples in the sphere of poetry, fiction and essay writing. Not long after the prize was founded, the journalists started calling it
“the Balkan Nobel”. So far, fourteen artists have been distinguished as laureates including
writers David Albahari, Anton Donchev, Nikos Bacolas, Vasile Andru, Venko
Andonovski, Fatos Kongoli, Maro Duka, Tahsin Yucel, Vladislav Bajac. The award-winning books are published in all seven Balkan countries, and
in practical terms they are included in the plans of many European and world
publishing institutions.
Parallel to its basic activities, Balkanika works on numerous other projects. The foundation established a Balkan Cultural Center in Sofia. At present, it makes best efforts to build branch offices of the Center in the rest of the capitals of the neighboring countries. Many interesting events take place at the Balkan Cultural Center including the large-scale initiative “Unknown neighbors” that has sparked great interest. Its goal is to present, on the base of reciprocity, prominent artists (writers, visual artists, musicians, cinematographs) from the Balkan area to the Bulgarian cultural community.
